What to Expect During an Activator Adjustment

Written By Kitsap Chiropractic Clinic on July 10, 2024

woman receiving an adjustment using the activator methodThe Activator Method is a chiropractic technique that uses multiple steps to adjust the spine. Activator adjustments can alleviate spinal imbalances that are causing pain, inflammation, loss of range of motion, mobility issues, and other discomfort. At Kitsap Chiropractic and Natural Health, our chiropractor Dr. Jennifer Sansen is a specialist in the Activator Method chiropractic technique and offers Activator adjustments in Port Orchard, WA. Here is a look at what you can expect during an appointment.

What Is an Activator Adjustment?

The Activator Method uses an instrument as part of a manual manipulation treatment plan. This instrument is spring-loaded and handheld and can provide fast, low-force impulses. The Activator adjuster works so quickly that your body does not have time to tense up in response or resist treatment. It also provides controlled, localized force that reduces the risk that your joint or muscles will bend or twist in response.

What to Expect From Treatment

An Activator adjustment is done while you are lying face down on a comfortable, padded treatment table. We typically start at your lower back and work upwards towards your head. We focus on each segment of vertebrae individually. During treatment, Dr. Sansen will identify the specific joints, vertebrae, and facets of the spine or extremities that are the source of discomfort.

How Activator Adjustments Fit Into Your Treatment Plan

Dr. Sansen will assess your overall health, symptoms, and underlying condition to design a treatment plan that fits into your lifestyle and will help you reach your health goals. We generally recommend one or two treatments per week for six to eight weeks. We will examine you after each treatment to assess your progress and discuss how you feel. If you don’t feel any relief after four treatments, we will end that treatment and create an alternate plan.

Is an Activator Adjustment Painful?

Activator adjustments apply force to the soft tissues near the affected joints. You will feel a slight pressure and a quick thrust that feels like someone tapped you to activate your reflex response.
