Kinesiology Tape

What is Kinesiology Taping and Can It Help Me?

A Bit of History

Kinisio Taping

"The Kinesio Taping® technique and Kinesio Tex tape was developed by Dr. Kenzo Kase in Japan more than 25 yrs ago. In the 1970's Dr. Kase began searching for a sports taping method which could assist in the healing of traumatised tissue and muscles. In 1973, Dr. Kase's objective was to create a therapeutic tape and taping technique which could support joints and muscles without restricting range of motion. He also hoped to formulate a taping technique which could have benefits for the lymphatic system. Following two years of research into muscle taping, tape elasticity, adhesiveness and breathability Dr. Kase developed Kinesio Tex® tape and the Kinesio Taping method."

Kinesiology tape has, in recent years, become widely popular among people with inflammation and/or injuries, especially athletes. Kinesiology Tape is a thin tape that is similar to human skin. When kinesiology tape is applied it doesn’t cause constriction nor binding to the applied area like other forms of strapping tape such as zinc oxide tape, elastic adhesive bandage and elastic cohesive bandage can often times do, especially if it isn’t applied correctly.

Some Physical issues that Kinesiology Taping can help with are:

  • Allowing Injured Athletes to Remain Active
  • Pain Relief
  • Reduction in swelling, bruising and inflammation
  • Anatomical Support for Weak or Injured Areas
  • Strengthening Weak or Injured Muscles

Other Ailments that Kinesiology Taping can help with are:

  • Sprains
  • Bruising
  • Soft Tissue Injuries
  • Joint Pain
  • Muscle Pain/Spasms/Cramping

At one point or another in our lives, we or someone we know, has experienced a muscle sprain, strain or injury or damage to a joint or ligament. It is a painful and cumbersome recovery process to say the least. Physical injuries such as ankle sprains, slow you down and restricts your range of motion by themselves, add in the use of ace bandages or strapping tape and your agony can be exasperated. Strapping tape or ace bandages impede a healthy range of motion and other daily activities.

Have you ever had to unwrap an ace bandage in order to be able to take a shower or wear just one shoe because your other shoe won’t fit over the ace bandage or strapping tape? For the inexperienced person, trying to rewrap that bandage correctly can be time consuming and dangerous if not done properly. A bandage that is wrapped too tightly can impair circulation, which will slow the healing process and if it isn’t wrapped tight enough it’s the same as not wearing one at all. Frustrating isn’t it?

With Kinesiology tape, all of those inconveniences and aggravations are eliminated. Kinesiology tape can be easily worn with ANY shoe and even in the shower. There are no more worries as to whether the injured area was wrapped properly in order to provide continuous and consistent healing to the affected area and kinesiology tape can stay on for several days at a time.
